Scientists diving in the human-occupied vehicle ALVIN recently witnessed a rare but predicted seafloor eruption along the mid-ocean ridge axis at 9°50’N on the East Pacific Rise. The expedition was aboard the R/V ATLANTIS, which is owned by the U.S. Navy and operated by WHOI to support seagoing research and exploration.
