Summary of Duties:
This is a seagoing position aboard oceanographic research vessels operated by the University of Hawai‘i Marine Center (UHMC). Operates and maintains deck machinery, cranes, winches, boats and other shipboard equipment, repair, sanitation, and upkeep of material, equipment, and areas in the deck department. Performs watch-standing duties for navigation and security purposes, conducts preventative maintenance work on the vessel, and serves as a socially responsible member of the ship’s crew providing a cooperative and safe working environment for the embarked scientific personnel and research project objectives. Maintenance of the ship's metal structures such as chipping, scraping, cleaning, priming, and painting. Must be able to work with crew and visiting scientists in meeting mission requirements. Able-Bodied Mariners (ABs) are members of the shipboard Deck Department and perform duties assigned by the Ship’s Master and Chief Mate. Employee will work on a rotational schedule based on operational needs (e.g. 3/4 months on, 3/4 months off).

Must possess a current MMC and required STCW documentation of training, a valid Passport, a valid USCG Medical Certificate, and a valid Transportation Worker’s Identification Credential (TWIC).

The UH Marine Center is responsible for coordinating operations on and maintaining the 186' SWATH (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) R/V Kilo Moana (KM). UH Marine Center facilities are currently located at Pier 35 in Honolulu Harbor. These facilities include: pier spaces for the KM, visiting research vessels, and several smaller vessels; a machine shop; cranes; and storage facilities.
