UNOLS is pleased to announce open positions on two of our committees!

Open Committee Positions:

  • Fleet Improvement Committee (FIC) – 2 positions
  • Scientific Committee for Oceanographic Aircraft (SCOAR) – 1 position

Call for Scientific Committee for Oceanographic Aircraft Research nominations:

The UNOLS Scientific Committee for Oceanographic Aircraft Research (SCOAR) is seeking applications and nominations to fill a committee position that is currently open. Experience with the use of aircraft (manned or unmanned) or coordinating the use of aircraft with other marine facilities in your research is highly desirable. In particular, individuals who have used or plan to use the Navy’s Twin Otter operated at the Naval Postgraduate School and/or other academic-oceanographic airborne platforms fielded by UNOLS institutions or government agencies are desired.

The term of office is three years and a member may serve one additional three-year term. For more information about SCOAR visit the website at:
 https://www.unols.org/committee/scientific-committee-oceanographic-aircraft-research-scoar.

Applicants or nominees should submit:

  • A current C.V.
  • A statement of interest to serve on SCOAR
  • A summary of experience using or operating aircraft (manned or unmanned) facilities for oceanographic research.

Copies of these materials should be sent to the UNOLS Office <office@unols.org> by January 30, 2019.  For additional information about SCOAR and committee responsibilities contact the SCOAR Chair, Luc Lenain at <llenain@ucsd.edu> or Annette DeSilva at <desilva@unols.org>.

Regional and institutional diversity will be considered in choosing a new member.* Committee members are appointed by the UNOLS Chair based on the recommendation of the SCOAR members and with the concurrence of the UNOLS Council.

* To maintain institutional diversity on the SCOAR, applicants should be from institutions other than those that will continue to be represented on the SCOAR.  These institutions are:  SIO, TAMU, Northeastern U, WHOI, and L-DEO.

Call for Fleet Improvement Committee nominations:

UNOLS is seeking nominations and applications to fill two vacancies on the Fleet Improvement Committee (FIC) that will open in 2019.

The Fleet Improvement Committee works to assure the continuing excellence of the UNOLS Fleet and to assure that the number, mix and overall capability of ships in the UNOLS fleet match the science requirements of academic oceanography in the U.S.  At this time FIC is engaged in several stages of vessel planning including development of science mission requirements, and review of ship improvements and transition to operations.  The future fleet composition, capabilities, capacity, and user demand, along with budgetary realities are all areas that FIC will continue to evaluate. Individuals who wish to contribute to these efforts are needed to fill the open FIC seats.

Candidates should have experience with the UNOLS Fleet and shipboard science activities. Requirements for the open positions are as follows:

  • One Non-Operator Position - affiliation with a UNOLS institution that does not operate a UNOLS vessel.
  • One Operator Position - affiliation with a UNOLS institution that operates a UNOLS vessel.

The committee membership should represent diverse disciplines and broad geographic interests. To help achieve disciplinary balance on the FIC, individuals with research expertise in acoustics are especially encouraged to apply. The committee members are appointed by the UNOLS Chair based on the recommendation of the FIC and with the concurrence of the UNOLS Council. *

FIC members are expected to attend two FIC meetings annually. One meeting is normally held in the fall in conjunction with the UNOLS Council and Annual meetings in Alexandria, VA. The second meeting is typically held in the spring and the location will vary from year to year. Terms of office are three years, with the possibility of re-election for a second term. For additional information about FIC, please visit the committee website at: <http://www.unols.org/committee/fleet-improvement-committee-fic>.

Nominees and applicants should submit:

  • A current C.V.
  • A statement of interest to serve on FIC
  • A summary of experience using research vessels and other oceanographic facilities.

Copies of these materials should be sent to the UNOLS Office <office@unols.org> by January 30, 2019.  For additional information about FIC and committee responsibilities contact the FIC Chair, Jim Swift at <jswift@ucsd.edu> or Annette DeSilva at <desilva@unols.org>.
