ROV Pilot/Technicians

Duties: 
The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is recruiting for technical positions in its remotely operated vehicle (ROV) group. Reporting to the Chief ROV Pilot, the incumbents ensure that MBARI’s oceanographic equipment (primarily ROV Doc Ricketts) operates efficiently, effectively, and reliably. The incumbents assist in the design, development, testing, and at sea operations of MBARI’s ROV Doc Ricketts and associated scientific payloads. In addition the incumbents must have seagoing skills that enable the individual to launch, recover, track and maintain ROVs at sea. The MBARI ROV programs are focused on both the successful accomplishment of science mission objectives and on the development of new technology to advance ocean science.

Mechanical position
The incumbent will be responsible for the mechanical and hydraulic tasks necessary to maintain the ROV system as well as integrate new instruments and tools used in the collection of scientific data. Operation and maintenance of the ROV is the primary responsibility. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to: designing of ROV components used in science missions, troubleshooting of mechanical and hydraulic systems, and assisting in the generation and maintenance of vehicle documentation

A.S. in mechanical technology or equivalent education/experience is required. The equivalent of three years of experience piloting and maintaining medium to full size electro-hydraulic work class ROV’s is required. Working knowledge of hydraulic motors, pumps, actuators, servo valves, solenoid valves, compensation circuits and hydraulic plumbing is required. Basic electrical and electronic components knowledge is required. Knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repair of large manipulator systems is preferable. Knowledge of the operations of ROV Launch and Recovery systems is preferred. Should have experience in sub-sea navigation, positioning systems and tracking systems (USBL). Basic computer skills in Windows operating systems is required. Use of Solidworks or
other mechanical modeling software is a bonus. Familiarity with basic machine shop equipment and the ability to perform fabrication tasks is desired.

Electronics position
The incumbent will be responsible for electronic and software tasks necessary to maintain the ROV systems as well as integrate new instruments and tools used in the collection of scientific data. Operation and maintenance of the ROV is the primary responsibility. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to: designing of ROV components used in science missions, troubleshooting of electronic and software systems of both the ROV and associated science instruments and payloads, and assisting t in the generation and maintenance of vehicle documentation

A.S. in electronics technology or equivalent education/experience is required. The equivalent of three years of experience piloting and maintaining medium to full size electro-hydraulic work class ROV’s is required. The equivalent of three years of experience with a large multi-computer telemetry system required. Working knowledge of single board computers, local area networks, serial data communications, fiber optic telemetry communication, power control systems, acoustic navigation systems and sonar systems is required. Basic computer skills in Windows/Linux is required. Computer programming knowledge and experience in real time operating systems is preferred. Use of OrCAD or similar design software required. Use of Solidworks or similar mechanical modeling software is a bonus, as is experience in the maintenance of mechanical and hydraulic systems. The incumbent must have the ability to apply job skills and follow established procedures to complete a variety of tasks.

These positions require the willingness and ability to work in a hazardous marine environment and work up to 30 days continuously at sea between port calls. Ability to lift 35 lbs. Must be able to work well as part of a team, independently and with diverse groups of people. Excellent communication and organizational skills are required.
