Relief Chief Mate

This is a sea-going position aboard the R/V Kilo Moana. The ship is operated by the University of Hawaii Marine Center, based in Honolulu. The Relief Chief Mate is the senior deck department officer and the Master's principal assistant in all matters pertaining to deck seamanship and the operations and administration of the deck department. Assigns, directs, and supervises daily work and watch standing of deck officers. Stands underway bridge watches as assigned. Comply with current SQ Management System Manual and applicable ISM Manual.


Must possess a current MMC and required STCW documentation of training and validity for USCG Chief Mate license Unlimited, a valid USCG Medical Certificate, and a valid Transportation Worker's Identification Credential (TWIC).

About Employer: 

The UH Marine Center is responsbile for coordinating operations on and maintaining the 186' SWATH (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) R/V Kilo Moana (KM). UH Marine Center facilities are currently located at Pier 35 in Honolulu Harbor. These facilities include: pier space for the KM, visiting research vessels, and several smaller vessels; a machine shop; cranes; and storage facilties.


Services provided by the Marine Cetner include: ship scheduling; provision of shipboard crew and technicians; engineering support; coordination of shared equipment such as underwater vehicles, submersibles, and small boats; and vessel chartering.
