Marine Professional - Ship Master (Captain) RV Savannah

Duties: 
Overall responsibility for vessel maintenance, operations, and preparation to ensure all systems and the vessel structural integrity are fit for sea

Overall responsibility for safety of all crew and science party members

Coordination of cruise planning efforts with science party, ship’s marine technician, and SKIO Marine Superintendent to effectively execute mission

Responsibility for the management of all medical and lifesaving equipment

Oversee safety drills in compliance with USCG and UNOLS RVSS policies

Oversee vessel inspections with USCG, ABS, and NSF

Overall responsibility for all ship logs with regards to maintenance and daily records

Serve as chief navigator/helmsman for all docking and hazardous navigational situations

Set watch schedules

Effectively supervise ship crew members to ensure proper conduct and completion of their assigned duties

Coordinate crew member training

Provide fair crew performance evaluations and correct deficiencies

Provide promotion and disciplinary recommendations to the Marine Superintendent

Ensure vessel is in compliance with all state and federal polices and regulations including State of Georgia, UGA, USCG, EPA, ABS, and UNOLS-RVSS

Serve as shipboard coordinator for all UGA, State and Federal policies including but not limited to EEO, Non-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment policies

Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications: 
A valid USCG 500-ton Master Oceans license required (1600-ton Master Oceans preferred)

Other licenses and certificates required: STCW, Medical PIC, Radar, TWIC, USCG Medical Certificate

Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of diesel and gas engines, pumps, compressors, generators, and auxiliary equipment common to marine vessels required

Minimum high school diploma or equivalent required (maritime academy degree preferred)

At least 5 years experience operating vessels of equivalent size or greater and mission in oceanographic research required (experience working in waters of the southeastern United States preferred)

Supervisory experience required

Proficiency with the use of personal computers including Microsoft Office software and email applications

Good physical conditioning with the mobility to move throughout the ship, enter voids and tanks, and the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds

Valid driver’s license

Successful completion of a criminal background check and drug test is required
