Duties: 
1st Assistant Engineer: Acts as the Chief Engineer’s principal assistant in all matters pertaining to engineering and administration of the Engineering Department. Acts as the daily foreman of the plant and oversees the performance of routine maintenance and repairs. Under the direction of the Chief Engineer, assigns, directs, and supervises daily work and watch standing of the Engineers in the Department. Completes all scheduled maintenance items and supervises the consumption and purification of fuel, as directed by the Chief Engineer. Performs all other duties that the Chief Engineer directs. Assumes the duties and responsibilities of the Chief Engineer in the event that the Chief Engineer becomes incapacitated due to sickness or injury. This is a sea-going ship’s crew working on a rotational schedule based on operational needs.
Qualifications: 
Must possess a 1st Assistant Engineer - Motor Propelled Vessels License, a valid USCG STCW Medical Certificate. Must possess a current MMC and required STCW documentation of training and validity for licenses. Valid TWIC and US Passport required. Ability to pass pre-employment drug test or hold current drug testing verification letter. Must be US citizen.
About Employer: 
RCUH / University of Hawai’i (UH) Marine Operations are coordinated by the UH School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology’s (SOEST), an operator institution in the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) and subscribes to the UNOLS Research Vessel Safety Standards.

The UH Marine Center is located at Pier 35 in Honolulu Harbor and is responsible for coordinating operations on and maintaining the R/V Kilo Moana (KM), a 186ft SWATH (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) vessel. The vessel was built in 2001 and commissioned in 2002. SOEST also owns and operates a 6000-m capable Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Lu'ukai, which is usually deployed from the KM.
