Green Workshop Objectives - The objectives of the Greening the Research Fleet Workshop include:
1) Promoting environmental sustainability within UNOLS. The workshop and the results
from the meeting will raise the issue of environmental sustainability within the academic
fleet, which will affect the way in which research vessels are operated and utilized.
2) Development of guidelines for construction, operation and recycling of UNOLS research
vessels that can be used by UNOLS and the federal agencies responsible for U. S.
oceanographic vessels.
3) Development of green vessel guidelines for a broad range of U.S. vessels in addition to
research vessels.
4) Promoting environmental awareness on UNOLS ships with U.S. ocean scientists and
students over the coming decades.
5) Positively influencing the Ocean Class and Regional Class vessel construction with green
technologies and practices.
The workshop recommendations and findings will be broadly distributed on the UNOLS website
and other public forums of opportunity.
