Executive Summary-
The MLSOC met on Sunday December 12, 2010 at the San Francisco Marriott for the winter meeting prior to the start of AGU. This was our second committee meeting in 2010.
Welcome and
Introductions
Graham Kent opened the meeting at 2 pm with welcome remarks and introductions.
An overview of the Incline Village Workshop was given. Graham also reported on the
LDEO Strategic Planning Session held in San Diego on Oct 24-25, 2010, which was followed by an MLSOC Meeting on October 26, 2010.
Agency Reports-
ONR- Tim Schnoor
ONR wants to stay informed on the activities of the MLSOC and the R/V Marcus Langseth and thanked the committee for efforts over the past year.
NSF-Jim Holik
Thank you for getting the proposal in on time. The SSSE proposal was submitted in December and the panel is Feb 9th for both the SSSE and Instrumentation proposal.
UNOLS Report- Jon Alberts- See Appendix III. Jon presented an update on the UNOLS Office. Several topics were reviewed including UNOLS staffing, recent projects and efforts, outreach initiatives and upcoming meetings. A review of the ship schedules for 2011 was given and more details on the Langseth schedule were provided in the LDEO Operator’s report. The current membership of the MLSOC was reviewed and further discussion followed on recruiting and electing new members. The ongoing effort by the Council was given along with the work of the other UNOLS committees.
LDEO Operator’s Report- See Appendix IV.
Sean Higgins provided the operators report covering many
topics. This included the recent
shipyard period in
Sean updated us on the multibeam system and a science report on the Korenaga cruise.
An overview of the maintenance planned for October 2010 through March 2011
Langseth Glosten Report- A report to study the winches and possible installation of new winches was conducted by Glosten. For phase I, the cost estimate was 1.2 million.
MLSOC Report- See Appendix V & VI
Graham Kent, Chair of the MLSOC reviewed current
activities. This included the
Glossy Brochure- Steve Holbrook and Graham Ken tare working on this. The MLSOC is asking for input from community. We need to consider our audience and need to get it out to other people to see if brochure is effective. Send it to NOAA, NSF, ONR, USGS, and industry.

MLSOC Membership- See Appendix VIII
We have 2 vacancies on the membership for the MLSOC. Ray Schmitt has decided to step down. The UNOLS office will do a call for nominations. We need a physical oceanographer and a marine mammal expert on the committee.
Next meeting is scheduled for summer of 2011.
