2003 ENDEAVOR Schedule Changes:

Affect Gschwend and Polzin by moving shipyard earlier. Check with CAPE HATTERAS if Gschwend can be scheduled in August.

2004 Scheduling status and issues:

Barnes: 137 days, 130 funded, Murray is not funded. Murray, if funded will go in 2005. Same applies to Greengrove.

Blue Heron: 13 days funded, Cuhel has a pending request that can go if funded.

Cape Hatteras: Double bookings- November Fleming cruise with SJII, Fleming status won't be known for another couple of weeks. 175 days total, 82 days pending.

Cape Henlopen: 188 days, 59 pending. NRL Yang, Goff, Fromm are funded, Boyd is still pending. Fromm is two ship op with Endeavor, but this is a month earlier than he wants, but ENDEAVOR can't move him later. Need input on NOAA pending days.

Gyre: 65 pending days all pending. We thought DiMarco was funded, need input from NOAA. Same note in July.

Longhorn: 91 days, 35 pending, all cruises are funded by "other" agencies.

Endeavor: 254 days, 7 pending, First D'Asaro cruise may be cancelled if all floats are recovered this year on CAPE HATTERAS. November D'Asaro cruise may change in duration. Craig Lee is double booked with KNORR, which is the requested vessel. Craig Lee should be removed from ENDEAVOR Schedule. The schedule will be reduced significantly by these changes.

Oceanus: 264 days all funded, coordinate McGillicuddy in synch with WEATHERBIRD. Need to add one day for Gregg for mobilization. Available for ARGO floats.

Pelican: 258 days, NOAA and OTHER pending 56 days. D'Asaro is listed as pending and noted as non-op but the non-op box is not checked. Need to mark this cruise as non op to keep it from being counted in the operational days. Check numbers on Fredericq.

Savannah: 137 days total, 18 NASA & 25 NOAA days are pending.

Seward Johnson: 252 days, with 51 NOAA pending days, which are OE. This cruise should be increased to 55 days.

Seward Johnson II: 218 days, with 68 days pending. Fleming in Nov. is double-booked with CAPE HATTERAS and is still pending. Nov. Teague cruise is still pending at NRL. Sizemore needs to be moved a week or so later. Frank and Pomponi are still pending.

Weatherbird: 174 days total all funded. 90 days total for BATS. NSF requests that a summary of days per project (BATS, etc.) be included in the notes at the top of the schedule.

Sproul: 168 days, including mooring work for COOP/RISE if needed.

Urraca: 187 days total, Glynn is shown as 17 days pending, should be 15 days funded. Everything else is shown as pending. Update schedule.

Walton Smith: 233 days funded. Bowen ONR HAT Sea Trial has been cancelled. Remove from schedule.

ISSUES Identified by Schedulers (brought in Rose Dufour, Dan Schwartz & Fred Jones by teleconference and web conference):

PI

Ship

Issue

Gschwend

OCEANUS/ENDEAVOR

Not scheduled, 2003 needs to move because of shipyard. Would like to go next August. ENDEAVOR is not available.

Fornari, D.

ATLANTIS

Needs one more dive

Saito, Mak

KILO MOANA

Funded, not scheduled, Hawaii

Parker/SAIC

NOAA Geophysical/Multibeam, East Coast, not scheduled.

B.Hickey CoOP

WECOMA/POINT SUR

She wants June. July would be much better for WECOMA (would allow scheduling Saltzman, which makes sense coming back from the Western Pacific)

Hickey CoOP

SPROUL

Mooring Deployment: Would help if SPROUL or somebody could take the mooring cruise.

Hickey CoOP

WECOMA

Mooring Recovery: Wants to recover her CoOP moorings earlier.

Hickey, B.

WECOMA

We don't have her ECOHAB work scheduled.

Peterson, W.

WECOMA

12 days throughout the year not well scheduled.

Huyer/Kosro

WECOMA

2 and 3 days respectively - can combine with a Peterson cruise. Verify funding status for Kosro

Taylor/Wiens

WECOMA

Want to go later but I think we gave them the number of days they need.

Saltzman

WECOMA

He is happy (if he gets on the schedule).

Sherr

WECOMA

They need to go in Sep. due to upwelling and earlier commitments on HEALEY.

Wijesekera

WECOMA

Needs to go earlier than Oct -- needs upwelling.

Fromm

ENDEAVOR/C.H.

Needs to move later.

Several

Several

Watts, Kuehl, SAFE, Clivar. Need to identify sequence of cruises that meets the most requirements.

Kuehl

KILO MOANA

At least a week too early

Measures

Various

Schedule conflicts between SAFE, CLIVAR & Nelson cruises

OBS schedule

Various

Laske might needs to move later unless McGuire is earlier. McGuire can't start until October. This means that Laske and Gaherty need to go in 2005 unless McGuire is deferred.

Lynn Talley

KNORR

About two weeks late from her ideal time frame. STR shows 9/20 as alternate. Also, ADCP is a question on KNORR.

Sohn & Tivey

KNORR

Need answer ISIS ROV. If not available, what then?

Martinez

KILO MOANA

Possible modifications or repairs to DSL 120 needed before Martinez

Stabeno, P

ALPHA HELIX

Need to confirm schedule needs using ALPHA HELIX and determine if fall requirements can be covered.

Embley /Urabe

THOMPSON 2

need more days than scheduled, need to verify ROPOS use and suitability.

Vrijenhoek, R.

REVELLE

ROV maintenance schedule - How does that impact conducting this cruise

Discussions:

Hickey COOP POINT SUR, ALPHA HELIX, WECOMA

Talked with Stewart Lamerdin earlier by phone about possibilities with POINT SUR in June. Stewart will investigate moving Hickey to start to June 15 instead of June 18.

* Decided to call Barbara Hickey later and ask about the use of the Alpha Helix with the Point Sur and about scheduling in July with WECOMA.

THOMPSON, MELVILLE, KILO MOANA, REVELLE

Showed current LOIs and developed the paper napkin scenario which is on Fastrack 2004 schedule version 030917. Keeps Watts on THOMPSON (ie THOMPSON 1 schedule.) Takes Johnson off and tries to fit Buessler. Doesn't really fit.

KILO keeps Kuehl and tries to move him later by taking Buessler off. Martinez cannot end any later than currently scheduled. Would need a break in Fiji or N.Z if Kuehl was moved later.

* Need to ask Kuehl if current KILO MOANA LOI dates are ok. Linda called, no answer, will send an email later.

Called Ken Buessler who said that he could consider other ships and dates, but wants all cruises on same ship.

* Jon Alberts will talk further with Buesseler about needs when he returns to WHOI.

MELVILLE takes back Swift/CLIVAR cruise, but starts earlier by transiting directly after Nittrouer. Mercer moved earlier, Johnson after Swift. Nelson and Laske after Johnson. See later discussion.

ARGO Floats:

Steve Piotrowicz from NOAA provided an overview of the ARGO float deployment plan. They are looking at 2004 and 2005 period for UNOLS vessel distribution of floats. Holes in the distribution of these floats exist in the South Pacific. They need around 900 floats to fill in the gaps Will use New Zealand and Russian ships for some and UNOLS for others.

Scheduling this work will be through the PI, Dean Roemmich at SIO. They don't necessarily need to send their own personnel, the work can be done with ship's personnel and technicians or members of a science party if willing. Would like a coincident CTD to 2000 meters with each deployment. May be able do lower number of CTD's if it badly affects the schedules. UNOLS should run potential schedules by Dean Roemmich for scheduling. Will cover the costs associated with increased transit time associated with their deployments with their budget. Not really a method to cover the entire costs of a transit.

Current Coverage chart for ARGO Floats:

OBS Schedule conflicts:

Looked at OBS schedules but could not talk with John Collins, to answer questions. (John called later, see discussion later in minutes)

Budget and Oversubscribed Schedules -Decisions and Action Items:

Started talking about the number of days on schedules and setting priorities.

NOAA priorities were Stabeno, Embley (both?), Weller, OE work.

EWING: Directed to look at scheduling Stabeno, both cruises if at all possible. Reduce schedule to 300 days if possible. Look at the OBS schedule carefully. Laske is a priority over McGuire according to program manager. Check on Andronicos permitting and consider deferring if not feasible. Defer McGuire, and consider Laske on EWING.

MELVILLE: NSF will prioritize cruises for removal from schedule. Move Nelson to Thompson or Atlantis. Move Laske to another ship or schedule later if possible.

ATLANTIS: Take Mazel/ONR off, move Booksh to EPR, put ECOHAB in the early September, move Voight earlier, keep all ALVIN cruise together and then schedule Non-ALVIN as a block. Looked at scheduling Nelson, but this is a conflict with Johnson on MELVILLE.

THOMPSON: Do Nelson instead of Haymond, move Haymond to 2005. UW call Paul Quay about doing his work on transit out for Nelson in Nov 04.

OBS: John Collins called. Vernon cruise is independent of other cruises. Christeson and Reves-Sohn use same personnel and portable lab. Need to work out shipping between ships and schedule adjustments as necessary (WHOI, HBOI, OBISP). Laske can go as early as Nov. 1, but no earlier. Cannot overlap with Andronicos due to personnel. OBSIP is considering McGuire as a 2005 cruise.

SUMMARY OF ACTION ITEMS:
