To make this meeting and follow-up more
efficient, I would like to ask each of you (usually paired with someone else)
to consider specific topics and needs and prepare a presentation (approximately
30 minutes) on the subject. The persons and topics are as follows:
1. Gene Massion and Alan Chave: Ocean
observatory functional requirements on UNOLS vessels and facilities (i.e., the
ocean observatory designer/builder/operator perspective)
2. Wes Hill and Dan Schwartz: Vessel
improvements, including requirements for new vessels under consideration. This
includes ability to DP in various seastates (i.e., what can we do now with
Class 1 vessels, what could we do to existing vessels to improve this, and what
should we consider in new ship classes), improvements to deckload and
stability, other changes/improvements to ship characteristics relevant to ocean
observatories
3. Andy Bowen and Bill Wall: ROV additions
and improvements needed for ocean observatories, including coastal use, work
vehicle needs, ability to operate in higher sea state than at present, the
state of the ROV industry and what they might have to offer.
4. Larry Mayer: Ocean observatory mapping
requirements and what equipment on UNOLS vessels will be needed to implement
it. This includes a review of the present and expected future state of mapping
tools.
5. Scott Glenn and Mike Kosro: Coastal
observatory-specific needs. This needs
to be preceded by an overview of coastal observatories and how they are installed/serviced
to complement what Massion/Chave will present.
6. Beecher Wooding and Ken Smith: Deck
handling improvements (e.g., winches and wire, special gear, a-frame changes)
for deployment of large packages specific to ocean observatories, including
borehole operations.
7. Peter Worcester: Mooring deployment and
recovery improvements, including both surface and subsurface moorings (This may
need to be closely tied to (6), and could be merged if the three of you think
this is appropriate)
Please don't let the topics listed be
constraining. If I have missed something important, please let me know.
I think if each of us does some homework as a
starting point for discussion, we can have a very constructive one day meeting.
