The University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) is the primary forum for planning and advice by the academic community regarding the facilities supporting ocean science research.  We currently face the important task of National Academic Research Fleet renewal.  In the coming years, the UNOLS along with the federal agencies will work together on implementation of a plan for fleet renewal.  This initiative along with the on-going initiative to provide the highest quality of fleet service will be areas of focus for UNOLS.  Individuals who wish to make a direct contribution to strengthening ocean research in the U.S. via support of the research fleet are needed to serve on the UNOLS Council.

Each year several seats rotate open on the Council.  The Nominating Committee: Curtis Collins (Chair), Bruce Corliss, and Charles Flagg are seeking nominations to fill four positions, including the positions of Chair and Chair-Elect.  These seats will be filled by election in accordance with the UNOLS Charter at the 2002 UNOLS Annual Meeting on September 27th.  Individuals affiliated with any UNOLS institution are eligible to fill the Chair, Chair-Elect and one of the member positions.  A representative of a UNOLS Operator-institution may fill the other member seat.  Terms of office are three years for Council Members with the possibility of re-election for a second term. The Chair and Chair-Elect positions are each for a single term of two years.

Following the 2002 elections, the UNOLS Council will consist of ten members, including the Chair, Chair-Elect and Immediate Past Chair.  In addition, the Chairs of six standing UNOLS committees serve as ex-officio members.  The UNOLS Council Chair represents UNOLS throughout the oceanographic community, calls and presides over UNOLS meetings, chairs the UNOLS Council and Executive Committee, appoints other committees, and provides oversight and guidance to the UNOLS Office.  The Chair-Elect position is new, replacing the Vice Chair seat, and will go into effect at the 2002 elections.  The Chair-Elect supports the Chair in representing UNOLS throughout the oceanographic community and in the Chair's absence, takes over the Chair’s other duties. Additionally, the duties of Chair-Elect include preparing to assume the office of Chair in 2004.  The UNOLS Council members represent and act on behalf of the UNOLS membership as the operating and governing body of UNOLS.

Nominations for the slate may be submitted by anyone affiliated with a UNOLS institution by May 15, 2002, to the Nominating Committee nominations@unols.org, or by mail to:  UNOLS Office, 8272 Moss Landing Road, Moss Landing, CA  95039. Not all individuals nominated will advance to the final slate of candidates.  The Nominating Committee must give due consideration to the qualifications of the individuals nominated, as well as to maintenance of regional and disciplinary balance on the Council.  Any questions regarding this call for nominations can be directed to the UNOLS Office at office@unols.org.
