UNOLS Ship Time Request and Scheduling System (STRS)
Introduction
UNOLS, with support from NSF, ONR, NOAA, MMS, USGS and USCG, has developed
an updated Ship Time Request and Scheduling system that continues to provide
online resources for requesting the use of UNOLS research vessels and submersibles,
Coast Guard icebreakers and other related facilities. This new system is database
driven and uses standard web browsers for user input. Major changes that will
affect how you use the system are the following:
- You will create and login with a user account that will give you access
to your past and present shiptime requests.
- You will only have to enter your personal contact information once and only
edit it when necessary.
- You will only have to remember one password (for this system anyway) for
all your shiptime requests.
- You can authorize Co-PI's and others to edit or help with your shiptime
requests.
- You will be able to create new or renewal requests and proposal/project
information by duplicating existing documents.
- You will be able to quickly find schedules that are published based on your
requests.
- Allows more flexibility in creating requests for different areas, vessels,
etc for one proposal and provides more information to schedulers.
- Eventually, this system will give you access to up-to-date information about
available instrumentation and technical services, to reporting functions and
utilization data for the UNOLS Fleet.
This system is still under construction, but we are at the point where the
Ship Time Request (STR) functions of this new system need to be Beta tested
by real users.
- We are asking that you use this new
system to create or modify your shiptime requests.
- Please provide feedback or descriptions of any problems that you may encounter
while using this system by clicking on the Comments/Suggestions link near
the top of the screen.
- This system will submit your STR to the same people that the old system
does and will be used by program managers, ship schedulers and the UNOLS office
to track the status of your request and for scheduling purposes.
- It will also allow you to print or email Text versions of your STR to submit with
your proposals.
Answers to Questions and links to Tutiorals are available through the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page, which is linked at the top of the Login Page and every page in the system. FAQ Page
Using the New System:
- This new system has been used and tested by UNOLS Ship Schedulers and Agency Program managers for the past year with ship requests imported from the old system. 2008 Schedules have been posted using the new system - 2008 UNOLS Schedules
- If you have submitted a UNOLS Shiptime Request in the past year or if you have a funded ship request for 2007 or later, then we should have imported your request and created a provisional member account for you in the STRS system.
- We request that you make any changes to existing requests or create new ones using the new system. If you have a Provisional Account you should have received an email from us with login information.
- Please use the table below to choose the most appropriate method for getting started with our system.

*** This new system may require extra time to get used to. If you need to update
or create a new STR quickly, you can still use the OLD
system for the time being. We will be removing this old system
in the future so we are still asking you to create a user account in the new
system soon to be sure that you understand how to use the new system before
your next proposal deadline.
Thank you! Please make sure to bookmark the main login page so that you can
return to it when you need to in the future.
