Stumbled into a "snap around" gel filled electrical splice from Tyco.

They look like they are made for outdoor and direct burial of big power cables but it seems like they would work well for protecting outdoor/on-deck/up-the-mast inline splices. I'm a skeptical about in-water use.

I've got a couple on order to see.

Anyone tried one of these yet?

I have used similar products in saltwater applications (not deep submergence, but in low pressure uses like TSGs and similar applications). The caution is to check to see whether the "goop" will stand up to salt water. We used a similar product some years ago that worked fine submerged in fresh water, but the goop broke down in salt water. Imagine my surprise to find a splice with a nice shell, but nothing inside, but goopy bits all over the inside of the instrument housing. We did eventually find one that worked, but it was trial and error. The vendors swore up and down that salt water was not a problem - not always so.

I would bet it works well in a static situation, but probably would develop problems in a dynamic situation like a CTD or tow fish or van deck cable.
