Ocean Class Science Mission Requirements (OCSMR)

Community Feedback Review by Fleet Improvement Committee

The Ocean Class SMR Survey and project background information are available at: <http://www.unols.org/committees/fic/smr/update08/index.html>

Summary of Community Response to OCSMR Survey:

Response to the UNOLS survey on Ocean Class SMR values and priorities was strong. Feedback was recieved by a broad distribution of institutions and oceanographic disciplines:

All of the comments have been compiled into two pdf documents. One document lists each SMR Element its target, threshold, and priority values as established by FIC, and all of the comments received for the element. This document is 114 pages long. The second document provides a list of all general comments listed by SMR category. Bar charts were also created to showing how the community input may have disagreed with each SMR element. These are compiled into one pdf file. All of these documents are linked below:

FIC Assignments:

The SMR elements have been divided into three groups in order to make the review process more manageable. Each FIC member has been assigned to a group, with four reviewers to each group. The assignments are as follows:

Instructions for FIC Review of OCSMR comments:

Each FIC member is asked to review the community feedback received for the SMR elements that he/she was assigned to. The page numbers in the chart above refer to the pages of the document Elements_report_081112.pdf. The summary of all general comments and the bar charts should also be reviewed.

The following guidance is provided:

  1. Identify any trends in the community response
  2. Identify any threshold values, target values, and priorities that should be revised based on the community feedback.
  3. Identify any areas where a consensus cannot be reached and recommend that these items be discussed by FIC.
  4. Please download the Excel spreadsheet at the following link to provide your review comments: <OCSMR_Review_Nov_2008.xls>. Columns H-M of the spreadsheet are to be used to provide your view on what SMR changes should be made based on the response received:

    - Mark Column H "SMR Element Ok with no Changes" with an X if the text in the threshold, target and priority are all good as currently written.

    - Mark Column I "Needs FIC Discussion" with an X if there are substantive differences that need discussion by FIC before arriving at consensus.

    - Use Columns J - L to recommend a change to the SMR values and/or priorities based on the response received. Text revisions can be suggested, whether or not you mark X in Column I.

    - Use Column M to record any comments, amplifying information or questions.

  5. If any additional information or data is needed for your review, please contact the UNOLS Office.
  6. Please complete your review and send the spreadsheet to the UNOLS Office by Friday, December 5th.

Thank you.
