New Research Vessel Design and Construction
Lessons Learned from previous R/V construction

The pupose of this questionnaire and associated web page is to compile a catalogue of lessons learned based on your experience with existing and past oceanographic research vessels. We want to help make sure that we don't repeat past mistakes and that we recognize and incorporate good ideas from the past as we move forward with the design and construction of the next generation research vessels. The recently completed Science Mission Requirements <http://www.unols.org/committees/fic/smr/> spell out what the community needs are, but how to best achieve those requirements will be developed during the design and construction stages. We hope that your input about the good and bad of previous research vessel design and construction will help achieve a better result for these next generation vessels.

What we want (just take me to the form):

Past Mistakes
- Descriptions of design or construction features that made it difficult or impossible to conduct certain science operations or that made it difficult or impossible to properly maintain or operate a research vessel.
- Problems with ship construction or design contracting processes that hindered achieving desired results.
Good Ideas
- Descriptions of design or construction features that enhanced your ability to conduct certain science operations or that improved your ability to properly maintain or operate a research vessel.
- Design and Construction contracting processes that enhanced the ability to produce the desired results.
Describe the type of vessel (or name the vessel).
Describe the problem and how it affected the ability to do your work, maintain the vessel or operate the vessel.
Comment on how the problem could be avoided or the design/construction improved in future designs.

Sea going scientists and research technicians with experience on existing or past research vessels
Research vessel officers and crewmembers with experience operating and maintaining existing or past research vessels
Marine technicians with experience on existing or past research vessels
Marine operations managers, port engineers, ship construction supervisors and naval architects with experience with research vessel repair, maintenance, operation, overhaul, upgrade, design and construction.
Anyone else with good ideas based on experience with research vessel operations and maintenance.
