Science Mission Requirements Workshop

July 23-24, 2002, Salt Lake City, UT

A workshop was held on July 23-24^th in Salt Lake City, Utah to draft a report containing science mission requirements for the Ocean Class vessels that would aid in concept designs. 

As a result of the workshop a draft Ocean Class SMR report was prepared and was available for community review and input throughout the fall 2002.  In March of 2003, the UNOLS Council approved the SMRs, version 1 as final.  The detailed SMR is a comprehensive document that attempts to provide enough detail to guide the design and build cycle from concept designs to outfitting of the finished vessel. This makes for a much longer document than previous versions of SMRs, but we hope this will serve to ensure that important details are considered starting at the earliest stages of design.

• Meeting Reference Material – A variety of materials were made available to meeting participants prior to the workshop.  This included SMRs for previous vessel designs.  Additionally, specifications for ship size, science accommodations, range, endurance, speed, lab space and working deck area have been complied for UNOLS vessels over 100 feet.  To download these specifications, click here:  <Ship Spec>.
