The UNOLS Fleet Improvement Committee submitted a short letter to EOS to alert the oceanographic community to an impending crisis in the academic research fleet. In the past decade we witnessed a remarkable rebuilding of the global and expeditionary ships (Betzer, 1995). We are now facing the fact that many ships in the UNOLS fleet, especially those in the intermediate/regional size class, are reaching the end of their useful life.
