Call for Nominations

UNOLS Fleet Improvement Committee

Two Member Positions

UNOLS is seeking nominations to fill two Fleet Improvement Committee (FIC) vacancies that are currently open.

The Fleet Improvement Committee works to assure the continuing excellence of the UNOLS Fleet and to assure that the number, mix and overall capability of ships in the UNOLS fleet match the science requirements of academic oceanography in the U.S. This is an important time for the FIC as plans move forward with Fleet Renewal implementation.

Candidates should be experienced in UNOLS Fleet and shipboard science activities. The committee seeks to maintain a membership representing diverse disciplines and broad geographic interests.  For this balance, individuals with a physical oceanography or ocean acoustics background are desired as new members at this time.  The two current openings also require that candidates come from institutions that do not operate a UNOLS vessel.  The committee members are appointed by the UNOLS Chair based on the recommendation of the FIC and with the concurrence of the UNOLS Council.

FIC members are expected to attend two FIC meetings annually.  One meeting is normally held in the fall in conjunction with the UNOLS Council and Annual meetings at the National Science Foundation in Arlington, VA.  The second meeting is typically held in the winter and the location will vary from year to year.  Terms of office for both positions are three years, each with the possibility of re-election for a second term.  For additional information about FIC, please visit their website at: <http://www.unols.org/committees/fic/index.html>.

Applicants or nominees should submit:

1.      A current C.V.

2.      A statement of interest to serve on FIC

3.      A summary of experience using research vessels and other oceanographic facilities.

Copies of these materials should be sent to the UNOLS Office <office@unols.org> by December 1, 2009.
