The University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) is an organization
of academic oceanographic institutions working in cooperation with agencies
of the U.S. Federal Government to ensure broad access to modern, well-operated,
state-of-the-art research vessels, aircraft, submersibles, and facilities required
to support a healthy and vigorous research and education program in the ocean
sciences. Currently, UNOLS is actively engaged in the academic research fleet
renewal effort, in the promotion of shipboard data management policies and procedures,
and in better definition of the demands that will be placed upon the fleet with
the implementation of ocean observatories and observing systems. Individuals
who wish to contribute to these and other UNOLS efforts are needed to fill three
UNOLS Council seats. The UNOLS Council members represent and act on behalf of
the UNOLS membership as the operating and governing body of UNOLS.
Nominations are being sought from UNOLS institutions to fill three Council positions
opening in 2008. Requirements for the positions are as follows:
• One Chair-Elect Position - affiliation with any UNOLS institution.
• One At-Large Position - affiliation with any UNOLS institution.
• One Operator Position - affiliation with a UNOLS operator institution.
The term for the Chair-Elect is two years, followed by being UNOLS Chair for two years, and Immediate Past Chair for two additional years. Terms of office are three years for Council Members with the possibility of re-election for a second term.
Nominations for the slate may be submitted by anyone affiliated with a UNOLS institution by May 31, 2008, to the Nominating Committee: Chair, Peter Wiebe, Mary Jane Perry, and Robert Collier at <nominations_2008 (at) unols dot org>.
A CV and statement of interest should accompany all nominations. The Nominating Committee must give due consideration to the qualifications of the individuals nominated, as well as to maintenance of regional and disciplinary balance on the Council. The committee will then recommend a slate of candidates that will be voted upon by the UNOLS membership at the Annual Meeting in the fall. For more information about UNOLS and its activities, visit the website, <http://www.unols.org>. The UNOLS Charter is located at: <http://www.unols.org/info/ucharter.html>.

UNOLS is seeking nominations to fill committee vacancies on the Arctic
Icebreaker Coordinating Committee and the Scientific
Committee for Oceanographic Aircraft Research (SCOAR).
The UNOLS Arctic Icebreaker Coordinating Committee (AICC), which provides scientific oversight and advice to NSF's Office of Polar Programs and the USCG icebreakers (HEALY, POLAR SEA, and POLAR STAR), is seeking two new committee members immediately and will need one additional member within a year. AICC strives to maintain institutional and scientific breadth. At this time we especially encourage applicants and nominees for the vacant positions from one or more of the following Arctic disciplines: Meteorology, remote sensing, and sea ice related research (preferably but not exclusively with focus on sea ice biological processes). Icebreaker (on USCG or international vessels) or high latitude experience is required. Late next year, the committee will be looking for one additional member, likely with Arctic Chemical Oceanography expertise. Committee term is 3 years. All members are appointed by the UNOLS Chair based on recommendation of the AICC and with the concurrence of the UNOLS Council. A member may serve one additional 3-year term. Membership for the first two candidates is expected to begin as soon as possible and for the third candidate in the winter of 2008/2009.
Applications or nominations, including a brief letter
of interest and a CV, should be sent to the UNOLS Office via e-mail to <office (at) unols dot org> by March 1, 2008 for the first two openings and by August 1, 2008 for the Chemical Oceanographer opening.
For further information about the AICC, please go to: <http://www.unols.org/committees/aicc> or contact Carin Ashjian, Chair at <cashjian (at) whoi dot edu>.
The Scientific Committee for Oceanographic Aircraft Research is seeking an
applicant or nominee to serve as the chair of this committee. We are also looking
for additional committee members to replace two members that are due to rotate
off in the next year or so. Experience with the use of aircraft or coordinating
the use of aircraft with other marine facilities in your research is highly
desirable. The successful nominee's research discipline will be a consideration,
as we hope to complement the existing disciplinary makeup of the committee,
which includes physical oceanography, air-sea interactions, marine meteorology
and marine ecology. Regional and institutional diversity will also be considered
in choosing a new member. The term of office is three years and a member may
serve one additional three-year term. For more information about SCOAR visit
the website at: <http://www.unols.org/committees/scoar/>.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMITTING NOMINATIONS
Committee members are appointed by the UNOLS Chair based on the recommendation of the Committee and with the concurrence of the UNOLS Council. Applicants or nominees should submit a brief statement of interest in serving AICC or SCOAR along with a CV to the UNOLS Office by email to <office (at) unols dot org>.
